Chapter 20

I felt the moment that my heart stopped and my bond with Emory shattered. It was the moment that I died.

My body fell to the ground and landed with a thump. My eyes were wide, unseeing, and for a moment I thought that it was over. For a split second, I felt excitement – I’d get to see Mum again. But then I took a shuddering breath and suddenly my hands were moving of their own volition. Glimmer was in control.

Magic surged into me, foreign and mighty, like fire being accelerated by a fierce wind. My hands pulled the blade from my heart. As it came free, my flesh closed leaving no remnants behind of the insanity of my decision.

My death had shattered my bond with Emory but not the one with Nate. Perhaps a master-slave bond continued even in death, or perhaps the fact that Nate was already dead changed things. Either way, I hoped he was with Emory. To feel our bond shatter – I knew what Emory must be thinking. I tugged on Nate’s bond as hard as I could and prayed that he would find a way to tell Emory that I was still alive before he succumbed to despair.

‘What the fuck?’ said Jonathan Randall as he strode in and saw me on the floor next to the body of his brother. ‘Evan?’ he said in disbelief.

‘Your father killed him.’ I sat up. ‘Just like he’ll kill you. He doesn’t care about anyone but the daemon and his power. You need to let us go so we can send the daemon back.’

I got to my feet as Jonathan’s face twisted in a bitter snarl. ‘Nice try, bitch. You killed Evan, and now I’ll kill you.’ He swung a fist towards me but this time I wasn’t bound and helpless. Adrenalin kicked in and I evaded his clumsy blow easily. He was used to beating helpless foes but I no longer fell into that category.

I brought my fists up to guard my face and shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet. Jonathan recognised a fighter’s stance and sneered dismissively. That was his next mistake. ‘Stupid dragon whore,’ he spat at me. ‘I’m going to enjoy killing you.’

Focused as he was on me, he wasn’t prepared when Elizabeth swung a loose manacle at his head. He went down like a tree. Blood spilled from his head – though he was still alive, for now.

I grinned. ‘Nice one.’

‘You died,’ she said, eyes wide. ‘I saw you die. And now you’re not dead.’

‘It’s better than that.’ I winked. ‘Technically, I’m now a dragon shifter.’

‘A dragon,’ she said reverently. ‘We just call ourselves dragons.’

‘Right. I’ll get the lingo with time.’

Before we tried to escape the room again, I swept outwards with my empathy. To my shock, I sensed not three people in the room but four. ‘Evan’s still alive!’ I exclaimed. His neck was broken but his heart was still beating.

‘He needs to shift then he’ll heal,’ Elizabeth said urgently.
